LOR (Letter of Recommendation)

The LOR is a document that provides the admission officers with a comprehensive insight into your suitable candidature, for admission into the concerned University.

  • In CAAPID, these are called “Evaluations”.
  • 3 Evaluations are mandatory (need to be uploaded by the recommender through a link provided in email )
    • 1 from Dean of your dental school from home country
    • 1 from any professor either in your BDS or MDS
    • 1 from someone who know you well professionally (supervisor at your job, dentist you volunteered at, your Master’s professor) – if its a dentist in USA it works even better.
  • Extra Evaluations are optional
    • There are some schools which let you upload hard copies of LOR’s in their supplemental application.
    • If you have any professors who can only give you hard copies, this is where you will get a chance to upload, not all schools have this option though.

Tips for a good LOR.

  • This is the step where many applicants get delayed, since they are waiting for their professors to upload LOR’s on their end.
  • I strongly recommend choosing a recommender well known to you and you are familiar to the recommender as well.
  • Have the LOR signed and scanned in PDF at least a week to 2 weeks prior to the cycle being open. So all the recommender has to do when the cycle opens is just follow the link and upload the the document.
  • It is your responsibility to make it easy for the recommender.
  • Prior to asking a recommender for an LOR, write down all the things that you have contributed while at school (like leading a tobacco campaign or being a part of annual events, organized team events, paper or poster presentations, if you have attained highest marks in any of the subjects etc) and submit respective proofs. So the recommender has some good things to talk about you in the LOR. Often applicants have graduated from dental school for over 5 years or more and the school faculty do not remember the candidate. The above makes it easy for the recommender.
